Weapon support assemblies for the UK Ministry of Defence

During 2015 CE Turner were approached by a major US Defence Contractor to assist with the manufacture of a prototype barrel support for tank weapon systems, for a major order from the UK Ministry of Defence. CE Turner were selected to partner on this important component primarily because of our prior experience and the fact that we are able to offer advanced procedurally based fabrication and welding process coupled with precision 5 axis machining capability. In addition, we have a robust system of quality control and documentation.

Initial designs were evaluated by CE Turner and we proposed improvements to be implemented prior to the manufacture of a prototype system. After detailed consultation with the design team, an initial specification was agreed, and a first prototype manufactured. The manufacturing was complicated by the requirement for extremely close dimensional limits both on the as fabricated and final machined components. In order to achieve the tolerances demanded a series of fixtures and production aids were designed, constructed and proved out.

All work was completed in line with a challenging timeline to ensure readiness for the roll out of series production. As a direct result of this successful development stage the company were awarded a production contract for the scheduled delivery of 250 units over a 5-year period.
